New FDA guidelines reinforce the importance of EHR data’s role in trials

The FDA recently released guidance indicating it is advocating for the interoperability of EHR and EDC data in clinical investigations to increase the agency’s level of confidence in these new data sources.

“This guidance reaffirms the importance of platforms like Deep 6 as the industry shifts to a more widespread application of real-time, real-world data” said Deep 6 CEO Wout Brusselaers. “Leveraging AI to mine the unstructured data in EHRs, really unlocks their full potential.”

In examining data exchange between EHR and EDC systems, the FDA noted that security and confidentiality must be maintained — Deep 6 has already taken steps to record complete audit trails and protect blinded information.

Relevant facts about the Deep 6 platform in light of the FDA guidance:

  • Deep 6 offers real-time access to a structured and unstructured (e.g., physician notes, pathology reports, and imaging) EHR and other clinical data.
  • The Deep 6 platform can be used by clinicians and research staff, without the need for IT support.
  • Deep 6 AI partners are already compliant — thanks to previous work for the Intelligence Community, the platform is exceptionally secure and resilient.
  • Deep 6 features robust audit and data control capabilities to track and control all access and changes to patient data in EHR records in a HIPAA-compliant environment.

Find Patients in Minutes Instead of Months – Outsourcing Pharma Covers AI’s Rise in Clinical Research

Organizations running clinical trials are adopting AI, often to help researchers find more, better-matched patient populations for clinical trials. As much of the data used to identify and vet patients is unstructured, it’s not searchable with traditional technologies, and manual review is often impractical.

As Wout Brusselaers, cofounder and CEO of Deep 6 explains in the Outsourcing-Pharma article, Deep 6 technology enables researchers to find “exceptional responders” to a specified treatment and helps identify patients more likely to have adverse events. "The ability to rely on real-time, real-world evidence to guide study decisions … unencumbered by HIPAA issues, is a game-changer,” said Stephen Gately, president and CEO of Deep 6 client TD2.

  • Deep 6 pulls structured and unstructured patient data from sources — such as physician notes and pathology reports — into a “patient graph.” This creates a unified data environment, wherein data can be updated and analyzed in real time.
  • Deep 6 technology enables researchers to find “exceptional responders” to a specified treatment and identify patients more likely to have adverse events.
